Ransomware Round-Up: May 2021

In cybersecurity, keeping up with attackers is half the battle. That’s why Tetra Defense offers a comprehensive round-up of all observed ransomware activity for May 2021. Backed by our own investigations, what the industry is reporting, and our monitoring of dark web blogs and forums actively operated by threat actors, we shed light on one of the most prolific cyber crimes — ransomware.

Learn the latest geographic locations of named ransomware victims, which industries they belong to, which activity groups deploying ransomware are publicly “shaming” their victims the most, and the newest threat actor groups attempting to “change the game.”

May 2021 ransomware threat intel yielded public attacks in unfamiliar places (China, Iran, and the Czech Republic), still primarily carried out by threat actors deploying the ransomware variants Sodinokibi, Avaddon, and Conti most frequently. May also saw the emergence of new threat actors with a more automated (and arguably, more dangerous) approach to ransomware: “PayOrGrief” and “MOTOCOS.”
